PHENIX CITY HISTORY
Phenix City’s history is alive in the stories people share. The goal of this Phenix City history project is to preserve the stories of those who remember the 1950s in Phenix City and Russell County – from everyday life to gambling rings and the assassination of Albert Patterson. The project came out of the Phenix City – Russell County Committee for the Alabama Bicentennial. Here, you will find an ongoing collection of stories from people who live here.
John Patterson is the son of the late Albert Patterson. He was the governor of Alabama from 1959-1963. In his story, Patterson shares how Phenix City evolved into gambling, the death of his father, and the move The Phenix City Story.
Dr. David White was the Vice Chancellor of Troy University’s Phenix City campus for 10 years. He was the chair of the Alabama Bicentennial Committee for Phenix City and Russell County. Dr. David White shares his thoughts on celebrating the bicentennial, projects from the committee, and Phenix City overcoming its reputation of organized crime.
Fran Loftin is the great granddaughter of Ma Beachie. Ma Beachie was the owner of an establishment in Phenix City. She shares her memories of Phenix City in the 1950s, Albert Patterson’s murder, and Ma Beachie.
Tommy Boswell was the Sheriff of Russell County for decades. He was a history buff and shares stories about everyday life in the 1950s.
Eddie Lowe was elected mayor of Phenix City in 2016. Lowe played football for Central High School and the University of Alabama. He shares how Phenix City has grown since the days of “Sin City” and what the city needs to continue to do to improve.
Heath Taylor was elected Russell County Sheriff in 2010. Heath shares stories he’s heard from the 1950s and how the office he now occupies participated in illicit activities. He also shares reactions from people around the country when he talks about being from Phenix City.
